On Friday 16th December the DfE announced a new grant for mainstream schools as part of their commitment to increase funding by £2.3bn for the next two years. But how will this be distributed, and how will it affect your trust?

From April 2023, mainstream schools will be allocated additional funding through the mainstream schools additional grant (MSAG). The DfE helpfully provided a methodology to help local authorities understand their share of the £2 billion, but they will be publishing indications of school-level allocations in the spring.

It’s been a challenging year for everybody in the sector so we wanted to help you understand the (positive!) impact that this will have on your budgets, so, with school-specific allocations unavailable until May 2023, we have taken the DfE methodology and created a calculator that will allow you to quickly work out your MSAG values.

All you need to do is input your schools’ pupil number data as well as your area cost adjustment for accurate predictions to include in your forecast for 2022-23 and budgets for 2023-24. Download the calculator here.

Happy calculating!
